Wow
This idea of Visitors and Residents as a continuum on the web has never occurred to me! It was particularly interesting how White and Cornu (2011) explored the concept between context and an individual’s role on the web – that is, this continuum of “Visitor and Resident” as well as “Professional and Personal” is truly dependent on the context of the person’s actions and intentions. I’ve included my personal Visitors/Residents map below to investigate this. As expected, the way I use the internet highly revolves around the status of a student – constantly researching, learning, and connecting with other students to collaborate on course projects. However, during my downtime from school, I do utilize occasional social media platforms to catch up with friends, or at times, streaming services to binge on shows!
Digital privacy and regulations made by the BC Office of Information and Privacy Commissioner was also a relatively new topic for me. Most individuals hear about the importance of privacy, but I don’t think the majority of people, including myself, are aware of how intricate, specific, and significant these laws are about personal rights and privacy. There’s plenty of research going on behind the screens which we interact on almost on a daily basis, and not everyone may be aware of the rules and guidelines of the online world.
Wonder
Having a resident/visitor map seems like a good method to gather data about a person’s online habits over time. I wonder if it’s been used for research purposes to uncover specific user behaviors and see if there’s any similarities or differences between niche groups such as those in business, health, fitness, etc.
