Wow
I was intrigued by Shelley Moore’s video on removing barriers for students surrounding inclusive education. I was introduced to the idea of the special education model which evolved from the medical model – the former highlights the fact that “students need to be fixed” the moment they don’t fit into the conventional model of special education. This was a new concept to me, as I haven’t been exposed to this kind of topic before. In addition, Moore mentioned the need to move towards a social model, emphasizing attention towards the following:
- Universal design for learning
- Response to instruction
- Collaborative models of support
I found it crucial when Moore highlighted how our current education system focuses primarily on the deficits of students. I agree with the fact that there exists specialized programs which only feed into the problem of segregation over inclusion. As the education system stands, there is a lack of support for the students who need it the most.
Wonder
Moore mentioned a timeline of the evolution of inclusion (see Figure below). I do wonder if there will be a stage after inclusion? Would it ever come to a point where there is no such thing as inclusion, but rather just as a state of being? Perhaps one can consider the idea of “coexistence”, or “community” as a vision beyond inclusion?
